Couseling Department
The School Counseling Department is a team of professionals concerned with overall development of each individual student. The School Counseling department provides four major services that will help students prepare for academic success; these services include classroom guidance lessons, group counseling, individual counseling and consultation. Emphasis is placed on individual counseling – particularly in the areas of academic, career, personal, and social development. School counselors hold individual conferences with students addressing academic and personal issues affecting their academics. They also process transcript requests; help complete college and scholarship applications; conduct group sessions with students; make available information on colleges, vocational training, college financial aid, scholarships and career opportunities. School counselors communicate with parents via phone, email, or appointment; and arrange parent-teacher conferences as needed.
School Counselors also administer a variety of standardized testing used for evaluating student progress, identifying needs, course placement, academic planning, and college entrance. The ACT (American College Testing) and SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) are optional tests administered on Saturdays at national testing sites for a fee. Redemptorist is a national testing site for the October, February, April, and June ACT tests. Students register for these tests by completing a registration packet available in the counselors’ offices or online. Students and parents are responsible for registering for the ACT and/or SAT. Seniors must take the ACT by April of their senior year to qualify for the state’s TOPS program. The RHS Counseling Department administers the PSAT (National Merit Scholarship Exam) to all juniors, the PLAN (pre-ACT) to sophomores, and the PSS (pre-PSAT) to freshmen at no charge to the student. The EXPLORE (pre-PLAN) is offered to 8th graders as an entrance exam and is used for course placement.
