ENGLISH
In all of the English courses here at RHS, the students independently participate in Summer Reading. Throughout all four years, students analyze classic and modern literature of various genres, study and use ACT prep vocabulary, and apply grammatical skills in the writing process. Each year major essays are written and compiled into a writing portfolio. A critical analysis research paper is written at all grade levels. Students are encouraged to enter literary contests in which, over the years, our students have been very successful.

The courses within the English Department build upon one another. 9th and 10th grade English classes focus strongly on grammar and the writing process while building a larger vocabulary base. Their oral and written communication is strengthened as they delve into the various genres such as fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry.

In the 11th and 12th grade English classes, the previous framework is advanced. English III emphasizes the historical development of American literature while English IV is designed around English literature, note taking, and theme writing.

The department also offers honor and AP courses. Honors English Courses are a more in-depth and accelerated study and analysis of literature, vocabulary, grammar, and the writing process. In order to be eligible for English Honors, a student must have above average test scores, semester grades of “A” or “B” in all previous English classes, recommendation from their current English teacher, and the student’s desire to excel. While enrolled in English Honors, and “A”, “B”, or “C” average must be maintained.

Students have the option of taking an ACT prep class as an elective. This semester course is designed to help students in grades 10-12 with study skills and test-taking skills pertaining to the ACT test. There are four major components to this class: English, reading, math, and science reasoning. The students are encouraged to take the ACT soon after completion of the course.
