The science curriculum at Redemptorist has four basic goals. They are: 1) to emphasize the importance of major scientific principles, their discovery, understanding and application; 2) the development of competence in the use of the methods of science; 3) the development of desirable attitudes, interests and appreciations related to science and its application; and 4) recognition through utilization of new technologies, of the role of science in the evolving atomic and computer age.

This most basic physics class deals with the fundamental laws governing science; however, it is for the weaker math student. Students must be enrolled in or Algebra III or Pre-Calculus to take this class. (One credit)

Physics deals with the fundamental laws governing science. It deals with motion, vectors, forces, energy, and various forms of waves and their application in everyday life. These principles form an important foundation for further study in scientific and medical fields, especially engineering. Students must have taken or be enrolled in Pre-Calculus to take this class. (One credit)

Chemistry deals with matter, its changes and various kinds of reactions, and with the atom and its bonds. The principles of chemistry are applied to such diverse topics as nuclear power, food science, medicine, and ecology. The emphasis of this course is on inorganic chemistry. It is a must for all students interested in nursing, any branch of the medical field, any branch of science, engineering, or any technical career. Algebra II should be taken in the same year as chemistry. (One credit)

Biology:

This course is an in-depth and faster-paced study of the general topics covered in biology. Permission of physical science teacher and a passing score on the Biology Honors entrance test is required. (One credit)

This is a more in depth course taken through the Louisiana Virtual School. Students learn more in depth about the cell structure, genetics, botany, zoology, and human physiology. (One credit)

This is a high school course designed for students who have successfully completed Biology. Advanced Earth Science focuses on the structure, properties, and interactions of the subsystems of the earth, solar system, and universe. Students explore the internal and external energy in the earth system and the geochemical cycles and processes. This course counts for TOPS. This course does not have a math prerequisite, so students who do not have the math credits for chemistry may elect to take this course their junior year and chemistry their senior year. (One Credit)

Students will be introduced to advanced scientific concepts and will learn how to use the metric system. The principles governing forces, weights, and measurements will be studied. A brief introduction to chemistry and physics will be given. (One credit)

Students in the junior high are taught life and earth science. Life science, an introduction to biology, is centered around an understanding of the various organisms. Earth science focuses on the study of meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and geology.
