Social Studies Department
Beginning with the freshman class of 2009-10 (senior class of 2013), all students are required to take four (4) units of social studies classes. ALL students must take Civics (1 unit) and American History (1 unit). In addition, each student must choose two social studies electives from the following subjects (all are 1 unit each): Psychology, World History, World Geography, and Sociology. We also offer honor level classes for Civics, American History, and World History.
For the 2010-11 school year, social studies is taught by the following: Mrs. Cowgill (department chair) – Civics, Honor Civics, and Psychology Mrs. Broussard – American History, Honor American History, World History, and Honor
World History Mr. Papillion – World Geography and Sociology Mr. Reed – Civics and American History In addition, Mr. Guilbeau is part of our department teaching our 7th and 8th grade social studies classes.
The Social Studies department sponsors three extra-curricular groups. Mock Trial Team is moderated by Mrs. Cowgill. This group learns the facts of a fictitious legal case. They learn the roles of prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, and/or witnesses for one or both sides. After extensive practice, they compete against other area schools. Tree Huggers is moderated by Mrs. Cowgill along with Mrs. Hite (Art teacher) and Mr. Raetzsch (Math teacher). This group is working on a plan for recycling for RHS. It is open to any student in any grade. We started as a new group last year, so hope to grow and improve this year. Students Supporting Troops is moderated by Mrs. Cowgill. The name fairly well indicates our purpose. This group was begun by an RHS student three years ago. We were inactive last year, but hope to reinvigorate this year. We will work on projects to show our brave men and women of the United States military that we support them from the home front. This group, also, is open to any student in any grade. |
